This is one of our more recent projects. When we first moved into the house, we removed a wallpaper border, repaired the ceiling, and painted the hallway. This fall, we decided that we needed a place to display family photos. So Leo installed a chair rail and we painted underneath the chair rail the same color that we used in our bedrooms. (Valspar-Waverly Classics-Coffee-eggshell) I believe that in a small house you need a lot of continuity.
It took me forever to decide on which photos to display. Then I reprinted them in either black and white or sepia and then framed them. And I'm still not finished with the display because I have some photos that need just the right frames. But overall, I'm pleased with how the hallway looks now.
The pine bench is actually a church pew that I bought at an auction in the 1980's. We used the iron piece in our master bathroom in our former home, but I think it looks great here.
Here is the other end of the hallway.
This is an antique mirror that I bought at an auction years ago. I think I'll put a decorative switch plate where that old plastic one is.
This was my grandmother's pie safe. I remember it sitting in her dining room when I was a young girl, and yes, she placed freshly baked pies in it. The print on top of the safe dates back to the early 1900's. Leo's Uncle Ben ran an antique store across the street, and he gave the print to Leo as a gift. Isn't the girl in the print beautiful?
That is the guest bedroom that you can see. I'll show it to you on another day.
Meanwhile, what can I do to pretty up my pantry door? Got any ideas? Click on comments and tell me what you think.

It would look great if you had the door distressed or replace it with an old screen door. Like your ideas.

Maybe you could put large black letters on each panel.one saying pantry and the other below saying goods. I did this to mine and it is cute.love your house very warm and inviting.
DiB
Please just leave it as is ...so tired of the black letter thing .
Frances
Wallpaper the panels with an easy remove product.
Love your home and garden.

Hi, thanks for the tour of your home, love it! Maybe for your pantry door and antique Screen door! I've seen some that are really cute for pantrys! Just an idea!
Joyce
Maybe paint the door panels whatever color you like.

A mirror or blocks of mirrors might add dimension to the hall area, just a thought!

I like the door. Did you leave it as it is or did you change it?

Your hallway just says "come right in" to me - love it! Love the pew, the photos, the scroll, all of it! I wonder what you've done with the door since you originally posted this ... Mary

Love your hallway! What a great use of space. Your home is warm, inviting and decorated beautifully. I love all the family history that you display throughout your home.
sabrina
Did you use a high gloss paint on the trim and doors?
Pat
Your hallway is packed with surprise!
I don't have a hall way in my home. Each room just leads to another room. We had a hall growing up... I like halls...
Hm... your pantry door? I noticed you had bead board in your kitchen. I love the bead board-- I have used the bead board wall paper to change the look of a door in my living room and I also used it on my kitchen cupboards too. Maybe you could put some on your pantry door and paint it complimentary to the rest of the hall or the kitchen...
I'm loving reading your blog right now!

JANE So far I am out of breath All the rooms and pictures are breathtaking and I am so delighted to look at all this beauty and creativity while drinking my morning coffee. Oh how I cannot wait to repost this but first I must finish looking .
I have no suggestions for your closet door I think it should be your own creation as the rest of the house is and I am awaiting anxiously to see what it will be! You and Leo have done and awesome job and how lucky you both are to have found such treasures from childhood and be able to keep them in your everyday life and in the family to cherish. This is absolutely AWESOME . If you do not mind I am going to share it with everyone on my facebook page. Keep going girlfriend!!! Love to Leo !

you could put one of those over the door hooks on the door and place a lovely colorful apron on it! I have an over the door hook on my pantry door that has four hooks (knobs) and it looks about the same size width as your door, so I have four pretty aprons hanging on it and it looks really nice.

Ms. Jane,
Love your blog. You could put fabric panels in each, with the upper having criss-cross ribbons and use it as a bulletin board. Then change is seasonally. OR You could paint the inside panels with chalkboard paint...then leave messages for Leo with your "honey-do-list" daily.

How about replacing the wooden upper and lower WOODEN panels with frosted glass inserts. You could even have the word "Pantry" etched in the upper panel. I've seen the complete doors advertised at Lowes or Home Depot. You won't be able to see whats inside the pantry. It might be less expensive the just get the entire door but I realize you want to keep as much of the original house as you can.

Hi Jane,
You have such a lovely home filled with some neat treasures and great colors too. I am glad you found my blog and you put your info in just the right place. I do my features at random so you just never know when I will come up with yours. Do you have a follow option? I did not see one.

Very nice hallway. I think a nice metal scroll work of some sort on the pantry door would look nice. I love the doorknob!
