    Fabric Hearts with Yo-yos

    Fabric hearts with yo-yos

Let's create some simple fabric hearts with yo-yos to fill your time and decorate for Valentine's Day. Plus, they make great gifts for loved ones!

    Several fabric hearts with yo-yos

Hello again, friends! It's been a while since I've posted. I hope your holidays were good. Ours were low key as Leo and I spent them by ourselves. But they were good, nonetheless.

We spent the week between Christmas and New Year's Day binge watching a series called Longmire. A great way to pass the time during these cold (and often times, rainy) days.

    Flocked skinny tree

One of the things I've also been doing is taking down the Christmas decor, but I left up the tall skinny tree that's in our mudroom. I removed all the gingerbread decorations but left the garland on the tree. If you'd like to see how I made it, see this post: DIY GINGERBREAD RAG GARLAND

This tree is going to be my Valentine's Day tree because I love seeing the lights each time I walk into the house.

I actually left this tree up last year and had started making these fabric hearts with yo-yos to decorate the tree. But my mom fell last January and I didn't have time to finish.

    Fabric hearts with yo-yos

Years ago, I made some fabric hearts in more traditional Valentine colors. These little hearts are so easy to make. All you need is a needle and some thread! You can find the full directions in this post: EASY TO MAKE FABRIC HEARTS

I made these hearts using fabrics that blend in with the colors that I used to decorate our mudroom.

And the difference between these hearts and the original ones is the addition of the fabric yo-yos.

Do you know what a fabric yo-yo is? It is a cute, puffy round of fabric made from a circle cut from scrap fabric. After hand stitching around the edge, you pull the thread tight to gather the material in order to make it puffy. You can find step-by-step directions on making them here: STEPS IN MAKING FUN FABRIC YO-YOS

Traditionally, fabric yo-yos were used in making quilts. I happen to have a vintage one that I've had for years.

When I made my fabric hearts, I decided to make yo-yos to coordinate with them!

This one was made with some scrap ticking fabric that I already had.

    Buffalo check fabric heart

This one was made from some scrap buffalo checked fabric. The little decorative button takes it over the top.

Don't you love the heart-shaped button?

And here's one hanging on the tree! I can't wait to get it finished so that I can show you the whole tree.

But these fabric hearts with yo-yos don't have to hang on a tree. They would look so cute in a bowl or on a tiered tray. They also make great gifts for your friends or loved ones.

I have found that stitching these hearts is a great calming activity, and they can be used to teach a young person how to hand sew.

Hi Jane, do you sew the yo yo's to the heart or using some type of glue? Also do you have a template for the hearts with the yo yo's attached. I saw the template for the easy to sew hearts but these are different. Luv the simplicity. Thank you for sharing.

The hearts are really cute Jane. You have such a creative mind. I have enjoyed seeing areas in your home since we didn’t have Christmas this year as we have in the past. Jean

I love these so much! My grandma used to make yo yos to use to make pillow covers and yours brought back many fond memories.

These little yo yo hearts are adorable, Jane. I've always loved yo yo quilts but have never found one that was in my frugal budget, lol. I'll have to make some of these with your tutorial. I have tons of little fabric samples and these would be the perfect thing to do with them!

I love these! So adorable. My mom always had a basket of hearts like these in the middle of the table, one heart for each of us in our family; good memories:)
