Ingredients

  • 1 cup ½ pound dry Chickpeas (not canned)
  • ½ Onion roughly chopped
  • ¼ - ½ cup chopped Parsley
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 rounded tablespoon Flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • ½ teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • ½ teaspoon Ground Coriander
  • Vegetable Oil for frying
  • Tzatziki Sauce for dipping
  • Pita Bread and Chopped Salad optional, for serving

Instructions

Soak the Chickpeas:

  • Place the dry chickpeas in a large bowl and cover them with cold water. Let them soak for at least 12-24 hours. They will double in size, so make sure there's enough water to cover them.
1 cup ½ pound dry Chickpeas (not canned)

Prepare the Falafel Mixture:

  • Drain the soaked chickpeas and rinse them well. Pat them dry using a clean kitchen towel.
  • In a food processor, combine the chopped garlic, parsley, and onion. Pulse until finely chopped.
    ½ Onion, ¼ - ½ cup chopped Parsley, 4 cloves Garlic
  • Add the drained chickpeas, salt, ground cumin, baking soda, black pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and ground coriander to the food processor. Pulse until the mixture is well combined and finely chopped, but not pureed. The mixture should hold together when pressed.
1 rounded tablespoon Flour, 1 ½ teaspoons Salt, 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin, ½ teaspoon Baking Soda, ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper, ¼ teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes, ½ teaspoon Ground Coriander, Vegetable Oil, Pita Bread and Chopped Salad, Tzatziki Sauce

Chill the Mixture:

  • Transfer the falafel mixture to a bowl and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1-2 hours, or overnight. Chilling helps the mixture to firm up and makes it easier to shape.

Preheat the Air Fryer:

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes.

Shape and Cook the Falafel:

  • Using a small ice cream scoop or your hands, form the falafel mixture into small balls or patties. If the mixture is too sticky, you can wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking.
  • Place the shaped falafel in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket.

Air Fry the Falafel:

  • Cook the falafel in the preheated air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes, turning them halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning.
